Juneteenth is now a national holiday. After decades of denial of granting the status of an official day of celebration, commemoration and reflection about enslavement and the struggle for freedom, the 19th of June 1865 is now venerated as a federal holiday.
On Juneteenth is a new book of essays about this day and about Texas, written by Pulitzer Prize recognized historian Annette Gordon-Reed.
