More than 20 people arrested at apartment complex
Four of the arrestees are members of a notorious Venezuelan criminal organization. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said 300 vacant apartments were cleared at the complex in the 10300 block Sahara Drive.
“We’ve confirmed that four TDA members are in custody," he explained, "Tren De Aragua members are in custody. One member is a confirmed enforcer for that gang.”
McManus added law enforcement was aware of more of the gang’s activities in other areas of the city, and he had a message for the gang members. “We are onto you, we’re coming for you," he said. "We know where you are, and we are coming for you.”
McManus said complaints had been made involving human trafficking, narcotics and threats to apartment complex employees.
Agencies involved included SAPD, the Texas anti-gang unit, the Department of Public Safety, the FBI, CBP and the Department of Homeland Security.
Robert Roberson faces execution later this month
The State of Texas is set to execute death row inmate Robert Roberson on Oct. 17. He was convicted in the death of his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki.
Doctors at his trial testified that the child died of shaken baby syndrome — a theory since proven to be junk science.
Roberson's attorney, Gretchen Sween, said he was unjustly convicted during the heyday of shaken baby prosecutions in the early 2000s. "The idea was you didn't even have to look at anything else," she said, "if you saw this trio of internal head conditions, you could presume inflicted abuse. But we now know that that is a completely false premise."
A bipartisan group of lawmakers pushed for Roberson to be granted clemency ahead of his execution.
