Missing persons case raises awareness of local domestic violence crisis

Ways To Subscribe

Suzanne Simpson has been missing for a week. Law enforcement, family and friends have been searching for the 51-year-old mother of four ever since.

Brad Simpson, 53, was arrested on Wednesday morning in Kendall County and charged with unlawful restraint and assault causing bodily injury to a family member. He was transferred to the Bexar County jail on Thursday, where he is being held in lieu of $2 million bail.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has filed sealed charges against Brad Chandler Simpson. Authorities have also placed a U.S. Marshals hold on Brad Chandler Simpson, according to a Bexar County Sheriff’s Office clerk. The details on the federal charges are not clear. A hearing is expected on Tuesday.

The Simpson case brings to light that Bexar County has the highest rate reported domestic violence per capita in Texas and one of the highest rates in the nation.

In Texas, one-in-three women will be affected by domestic violence. The fatality risk for domestic violence victims increases 700 percent when a gun is in the household. In 2023, 205 Texans were killed by an intimate partner; a firearm was used in 75 percent of those murders. The youngest victim was 15 years old, the oldest was 88.
