Presentation sponsored by the King William Association Cultural Arts Committee. Cindy Luongo Cassidy, Leader of Dark Sky Texas, explains the benefits of effective outdoor lighting. The way that many outdoor lights are designed and installed neither considers the nature of the human eye nor current scientific knowledge. Poorly designed or installed outdoor lighting limits visibility by producing glare which reduces our safety and security, creates light trespass, wastes money, jeopardizes the health of all living things, and may be detrimental to a community rather than an asset. Come learn about how you can have better outdoor lighting.

Free and open to the public of all ages.

Join us for a virtual discussion about Mexican American teachers and Mexican American educational achievement between the 1920s and 1940s. What were the learning conditions for Mexican American teachers and students? How did they contest inequity in education? This virtual talk will feature education historians Gonzalo Guzmán, Philis M. Barragán Goetz, and Laura K. Muñoz.

Attention writers: learn how to write memorable sex scenes that fit your characters and your plot! This is a frank, fun, respectful workshop about the ‘birds and the bees,’ and what goes on between the sheets, or on the kitchen floor, or maybe out at sea. This class will allow participants to explore the many ways of writing about sex, no matter the genre or fictional interest–Thriller, Science Fiction, Romance, Suspense, Mystery, Western, Saga, General Fiction, and more.

The classes will feature writing prompts inspired by books, song lyrics, visual images, short videos, and more, with writers interpreting them by creating their own versions. Each session will include in-class writing, homework assignments, and opportunities for writers to share their work in progress. Open to fiction writers 18 and older, the course will help students learn how to decipher the needs of a sex scene versus a romantic scene, write compelling scenes in their chosen genre, and develop ideas to keep the creative process going.

Writing as Laura Parker, she creates historical and contemporary romance, westerns, and sagas; as Laura Castoro, contemporary African American and women’s fiction; and as D.D. A multiple national award winner and 2005 Arkansas Writers’ Hall of Fame inductee, she is a former president of Novelists, Inc. and the Writers Colony at Dairy Hollow.

Gardening Volunteers of South Texas will be there with information about San Antonio Water System WaterSaver landscape coupons and outdoor rebates for residential customers.

Merry Langlinais will present for an hour. Her book “Critters of Red Heart, The Winged Ones II” will be available for purchase. Forms of payment accepted are major credit cards and cash.

The Sierra Club (Alamo Group) meets on the 3rd Tuesday of most months (excludes November and December) to discuss timely topics pertaining to the health of the natural and human environment. Always free and open to the public.

Meetings generally consist of a meet-and-greet followed by a presentation by an invited speaker, with discussion. Always informative and enjoyable!
