County commissioners reach understanding with Missions over new ballpark

Bexar County Commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday with the San Antonio Missions ownership group and Weston Urban developers to provide public financing for a new ballpark downtown.

The public funding would come from the issuances of $126 million in bonds, funded in part by revenue from a Houston Street taxing zone, which itself stands to benefit a lot economically from a new ballpark. The team plans a $34 million initial contribution.

The proposed stadium would be built in Precinct 2, represented by county Commissioner Justin Rodriguez, who has pledged to take care of residents displaced by the project, like those in the Soap Factory Apartments.

Commissioners were told economic development around the proposed stadium would happen because it's contractual. The county is still bitter that talk of economic booms around Wolff Stadium and what is now the Frost Bank Center never materialized.

Major League Baseball wants assurances a new home for the Missions will be ready by the 2028 season.

The plan to build a new stadium for the San Antonio Missions involves the demolition of an apartment complex that currently hosts over 300 San Antonio residents.

Search for real estate agent continues

The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Olmos Park Police Department have issued a missing person alert for a San Antonio area real estate agent.

Suzanne Clark Simpson was seen Sunday night at The Argyle in Alamo Heights. Olmos Park police said the 51-year-old was wearing a black dress with black heels.

Police said Simpson was seen later that night near her home on East Olmos Drive. Officials have searched the area since then. Olmos Park Police ask that anyone with information call their dispatch number at 210-822-2000.

On Wednesday, police arrested her husband over two active warrants. Brad Chandler Simpson was picked up in Kendall County on family violence warrants for assault causing bodily injury and unlawful restraint. Bond was pending, according to the arrest report.

City and Southwest Airlines return to court in December

The City of San Antonio and Dallas-based Southwest Airlines will return to federal court in December over disputes in a long-term lease agreement with the San Antonio International Airport.

Southwest sued the city last month over its terminal assignment at the airport. It said it was unfairly left out of gate assignments at the new Terminal C.

A preliminary injunction hearing in the lawsuit is scheduled for Dec. 19.

A federal judge denied a request last week to block new airline lease agreements from taking effect on Oct. 1.

Bexar County sheriff aware of dog attack issue

Following the mauling the death of a one-year-old boy, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says the area has a serious issue with dangerous dogs.

"I mean, look, it's something that we continue to see every day on the news," he said Tuesday on TPR's "The Source." "It seems like we're hearing about vicious dogs, loose dogs, dog attacks. It is something that seems to be on the rise. Now, I don't know if it's because we're increasing awareness and people are calling it in more often, but it certainly is an ongoing issue for us."

Salazar said Bexar County Animal Control reported that it received 3,341 calls in 2023.

The investigation into Monday's mauling death continues. The infant's babysitter who left two children alone with dangerous dogs was charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. In a statement, investigators later charged her with "injury to a child — reckless bodily injury, a state jail felony, and endangering a child, imminent danger — causing bodily injury, a second-degree felony."

The child died of his injuries on Monday night. His babysitter was arrested and charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury, a first-degree felony. In a statement, investigators later charged her with 'injury to a child — reckless bodily injury, a state jail felony, and endangering a child, imminent danger — causing bodily injury, a second-degree felony.'

Legacy Elementary will replace Robb Elementary in Uvalde

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District has chosen a name for the school intended to replace Robb Elementary.

Legacy Elementary was named in remembrance of the 19 students and two teachers were killed in the 2022 shooting.

A committee of community members worked for almost a year to select potential names for the school.

The school board unanimously approved the name Tuesday night. Construction on the new school began earlier this year. It's expected to open by fall 2025.

The new videos largely affirm prior reporting and investigations that detailed law enforcement’s failures to confront the gunman who killed 19 children and two teachers.
