Bernie Sanders inspires San Antonio Democrats
Vermont's Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders was in San Antonio on Monday night as part of a multi-day visit to Texas to campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris.
He blasted former president Donald Trump for his stances on abortion and climate change. He also said this presidential election is about fighting against what he calls Trump's strong anti-democratic tendencies.
"We cannot maintain our Democratic foundation when we have a former president who encouraged an insurrection to overthrow the results of the last election."
He emphasized to rally attendees that Harris has a chance to win Texas, and with that, the election.
Sanders' visit in Texas continues today at Texas State University.
Federal asylum restrictions at southern border are strengthened
The Biden administration has introduced stricter asylum restrictions at the southern border, aiming to address growing concerns over immigration and border security.
The new rules build upon previous measures implemented in June. The administration now requires the daily number of border crossings to stay below 1,500 for nearly a month before lifting any restrictions.
The new policy also includes counting all children, not just those from Mexico, in the daily totals. Access to asylum remains limited by the capacity of the CBP One app, which offers 1,450 appointments per day.
While the administration encourages migrants to use the app to request entry to the US, demand far exceeds the availability, leaving many without a legal option to seek protection. Immigrant rights activists in the US and Mexico have criticized the change as an effective ban on asylum.
AG Paxton plans to fight judge's SBI ruling
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said that he will move to immediately challenge a ruling by a federal judge that found parts of the Texas voter security law SB1 unconstitutional.
The ruling only concerned the state’s attempt to block assistance with absentee ballots. That means the state can no longer investigate voter assistance efforts as a criminal act.
Paxton cited the law when his office raided the homes of organizers with one of the nation's largest civil rights organizations searching for voter fraud.
He says the ruling prevents his office from investigating potential election violations.
Judge denies request from Southwest Airlines to block lease deals
A federal judge denied a request Monday from Southwest Airlines to block airline lease agreements from taking effect today at the San Antonio International Airport.
The City Council approved operating agreements and terminal leases with several airlines last month.
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines refused to sign over disagreements with its assignment in Terminal A.
It sued the city to keep the current lease agreements temporarily in place.
The Express-News reported the judge rejected the injunction and said it would not cause Southwest irreparable harm if the lease agreements took effect.
Spurs welcome veteran players as mentors
The San Antonio Spurs kicked off media day on Monday ahead of the start of the 2024 pre-season.
The Spurs welcomed NBA veterans Chris Paul and Harrison Barns to the roster. Head coach Gregg Popovich said the veterans will help serve as mentors on the team.
Paul says he's excited to get to work with the team. "There's a building phase and a process to it," he said, "but I'm sure anybody on the team will tell you we want to learn and build and try to win at the same time."
The Spurs play their first pre-season game against the OKC Thunder on Monday.
Tonight, residents try to meet their neighbors
Police say one of the best ways for residents to fight crime is for them to know their neighbors.
Tuesday night is San Antonio Neighbors Together night. Residents are expected to gather from around 5 to 8 p.m. for block parties to get to know one another.
Police said if people know who belongs on their street, they can better spot who doesn't and report suspicious activity.
One of the bigger neighborhood gatherings is tonight at West End Park.
There will be free food and raspas. Irving Academy mariachis and some local elected leaders are also expected to attend.
