QUEER STRENGTH is the third installment of Jump-Start’s spring storytelling series, an evening at the theater centered on truth, resilience, and celebration. Curated by company members Jessica Hawkins and Giomara Bazaldua, it features storytellers Alejandra Sánchez Alanís, Henry de Leon, Rosie Speedlin Gonzalez, Julius Hunter, and Sofia Sepulveda, who share hard-earned wisdom from their journeys of navigating identity, building community, and creating spaces of belonging in San Antonio.
Their stories honor courage and survival, but also insist on the power and necessity of queer joy—portraying it as essential, radiant, and revolutionary. Produced by Bazaldua and Hawkins with support from Joyous Windrider Jimenez, STORIES WE CARRY: QUEER STRENGTH is hosted by Jess and includes a special dance performance by Gio.
Tickets are choose-what-you-pay: $0, $5, $10, $15, $20 or $25.
Black Box Live at The Tobin Center presents an intimate evening of masterful songwriting and storytelling, featuring three of Texas’ most celebrated voices in a special acoustic performance. In a uniquely up-close setting, this one-night experience invites audiences to hear the music in its purest form, stripped down, deeply personal, and powerfully resonant.
Lisa Morales brings her genre-blending sound rooted in Mexican heritage, soul, folk, blues, and Americana. A fixture of the Texas music scene, she first gained recognition as one-half of the beloved duo Sisters Morales, a staple across the Southwest from the ’80s through the early 2000s. Praised by Rolling Stone as “one of the most multifaceted artists to watch,” Morales continues to craft songs rich with emotion and authenticity.
James McMurtry, hailed as one of America’s greatest living songwriters, is known for his sharp lyrical storytelling and vivid portrayals of everyday life. As John Mellencamp once said, “James McMurtry writes like he’s lived a lifetime”, a sentiment reflected across his acclaimed, decades-spanning catalog.
Bruce Robison, one of the Lone Star State’s most influential songwriters, has penned chart-topping hits for artists like The Chicks, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, and George Strait. His work continues to shape the landscape of Texas songwriting, both on stage and through his platform, The Next Waltz.
Together, these acclaimed artists create an unforgettable night of songs and stories, shared just feet away.
