Texas prisoners enter week 3 of hunger strike against TDCJ’s solitary confinement practices
A group of incarcerated men across several Texas prisons have been on a hunger strike since Jan. 10, the start of the state’s 88th Legislative Session. Now in week three, dozens of them continue the peaceful protest against long-term solitary confinement.

Suicide rates among veterans are 1.5 times higher than the general population
In 2020, there were more than 6,000 United States veteran suicides. This averaged out to almost 17 people per day. Veteran suicide rates have trended downward but they still take their own lives 1.5 times higher than the general population.

‘Preparing for War’ traces the history of white Christian nationalism from John Birch to Jan. 6
There has been a recent rise in religious and political leaders who have embraced the ‘Christian Nationalist’ label. In fact, most adults who live in the United States falsely believe that America’s founders intended the country to be a Christian nation, and 45% of adults who live in the United States today believe that it should be a Christian nation. This subsect of Christianity thinks that a civil war is imminent.

Jared Yates Sexton writes in “The Midnight Kingdom” about the dangerous abuses that those in power carried out throughout history. Those same people, he argues, reshaped those stories into fictions for people to better swallow the past. Many still cling to the myths about Western civilization, and Sexton exposes the political power and religious indoctrination behind it.

The state’s biennial maternal death report shows a wide gap in maternal outcomes between Black pregnant people and their white counterparts.

SA teacher shortage attributed to overworked, underappreciated teachers
Compared to last year’s departures, 2022 saw teachers leave their profession at a rate 56% higher than the previous summer. Experts believe that the problems teachers face were compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. Low pay, school shootings and culture wars have always been present, but in recent years these issues have intensified.

Grassroots organizations seek to amend the city charter to reform police and decriminalize abortion, marijuana
A coalition of grassroots organizations seek to amend the city charter. The San Antonio Justice Charter initiative would reform certain police practices and enforcement. The proposed amendments would ban the San Antonio Police department from the use of no-knock warrants and chokeholds and expand the cite-and-release policy. They would also decriminalize low-level marijuana possession, abortion, and establish a city Justice Director.
