Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 5 to May 11, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency encouraged Texans to begin or review their plans for enduring bad weather, flooding and, if necessary, evacuation.
FEMA recommended establishing meeting points so families can find each other if storms required them to flee to safer areas. If there’s no time to evacuate, people should determine where they will shelter.
FEMA also recommended preparing an emergency kit that contains three days’ worth of water, food, and medications. The kit should also contain cash, a first aid kit, a flashlight and batteries.
Important papers should be stored near the emergency kit in a fireproof or waterproof box or safe. People shoukd make electronic copies on a flash drive or CD and put them in the emergency kit, store them on a digital-storage website, or email them to themselves.
