Síclovía enters its third year this Sunday, Sept. 29, and the UT Health Science Center has announced results of a survey that revealed attendance at the event motivated people to stay active following Síclovía activities.

UT Health Science Center researcher Dr. Deborah Parra-Medina sent a team out to survey attendees at the last Síclovía in April and almost 400 responded.

The survey found that 87 percent of people came with their family or friends, indicating a strong social support element for exercise.

Here are some highlights of the preliminary results:

  • 53% of respondents reported they changed their physical activity level after attending a Síclovía event.
  • 47% of respondents reported they tried a new activity at the event.
  • 57% of respondents reported they would not have been physically active the day of Síclovía had it not been for the event.
  • 64% of attendees came from San Antonio zip codes known for high to extremely high levels of obesity.

The YMCA, which took over operation of the event after the city’s CPPW grant expired, requested the study to demonstrate and quantify Síclovía’s effectiveness for the community.
