¡Por Vida! Adds 22nd Restaurant To Healthy-Eating List

¡Por Vida! the City of San Antonio's healthy menu initiative, welcomes another member restaurant to the healthy-eating program.

The initiative was launched in the Fall of 2010 with just a handful of restaurants and today the program has grown to a list of 22 establishments with over 500 meal choices to choose from.

Kasey Pape, a registered dietician at Metropolitan Health District, said Mediterranean restaurant Papouli’s became the newest member after requesting the certification this week.

"They actually contacted us because serving healthy food has always been a priority with them. We've been really fortunate with the ¡Por Vida! program. People have mainly come to us and wanted to join," Pape said.

Pape said Papouli’s has several menu items for adults and everything on the kids’ menu is 100% ¡Por Vida!

"For a total meal, it has to be less than 700 calories, 23 grams of total fat, 8 grams saturated fat, less than half a gram of trans fat and 750 milligrams of sodium. And it cannot include any fried foods," Pape said.

Members of the campaign display the Por Vida logo, a red plate with a yellow fork and knife in the shape of a heart. Approved eateries include The Egg and I, Jim’s, Luby’s, Pico de Gallo, UTSA’s café, NuStar’s Grill, and several other locations.
