In this two-part lecture, led by 2025 Texas Poet Octavio Quintanilla, we will explore how writers can use new and existing work to create graphic literature—a form that merges text with visual storytelling to evoke powerful, multidimensional narratives. Each session features an engaging craft talk, actionable writing strategies, and a live Q&A with the author.

Octavio Quintanilla is the 2025 Texas Poet Laureate and the author of the poetry collections, If I Go Missing (Slough Press, 2014), The Book of Wounded Sparrows (Texas Review Press, 2024), and Las Horas Imposibles / The Impossible Hours (University of Arizona Press, 2025), winner of the 2024 Ambroggio Prize of the Academy of American Poets. He’s the founder and director of the literature & arts festival VersoFrontera, publisher of Alabrava Press, and former Poet Laureate of San Antonio.

The call for applications for the Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association Certification Class of 2026 is now open!
You must complete the Application and Volunteer Agreement Packet and deliver it, along with your $195 payment, made out to Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association, to Kelly Tarla, Burnet County Extension Agent by Friday, January 30, 2026 to be considered.
The Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association will again offer a certification course at the Texas AgriLife Extension office in Burnet beginning Tuesday, February 17, 2026 through Tuesday, April 28, for 11 weeks. Class times are 9:30 AM until 2:30 PM. Class size will be limited and will generally meet at the AgriLife auditorium in Burnet (occasionally meeting at other locations for field trips).
The course provides a comprehensive background in horticulture principles and practices with an emphasis on conservation, sustainability, and community service. Experts are invited each week to speak on such topics as soil composition and amendments, trees, entomology, vegetable gardening, water irrigation, plant taxonomy, invasive plants, landscape design, water conservation, plant propagation, grafting, and rainwater harvesting. We expect to have several field trips planned. The classes are fun and stimulating. They not only train the participants to be more knowledgeable gardeners for personal use but also to be of service and a resource to the community.
Mental Health and physical health are deeply interconnected. In this session, we will learn about the various factors that affect mental health, as well as the strong connection between the gut microbiome and emotional well-being. A Community Nutrition Education Coordinator with the San Antonio Food Bank will lead us through a cooking demo.

The Gatherings is a community art celebration curated by fiber artist, Deborah Harris.
The Gatherings 2026 will feature San Antonio young artists who will showcase their art at the International Folk Culture Center. The Gatherings this year will focus on the question; What sparks you?
Young artists will share what their inspirations are and what keeps them creating. Community participants will have the opportunity to answer this question for themselves as they participate in the Art Workshop, Panel, and Food Sharing.
