A new backcountry area at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area opened Tuesday, giving experienced hikers access to rugged new trails as the first phase of a roughly 3,000-acre expansion that has doubled the size of the popular Hill Country park.

The breach, involving a vendor for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, took place last Thursday.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has acquired nearly 54,000 acres in Edwards and Kinney counties for what will become Silver Lake State Park. The land sits just about 150 miles west of San Antonio.

Bear Creek State Park in Uvalde County will grant visitors access to streams, canyons, and hiking trails along the Frio River.

The land is right across the Colorado River from Colorado Bend State Park. The new park may be open in about two years.

If you have a backyard birdbath and feeder, it’s a good idea to take them down. That’s according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The agency also recommends not feeding ducks and other waterfowl that flock at area parks.
