The sixth semi-annual Síclovía will turn roadways into bike lanes this weekend as thousands of San Antonians are expected to flock to the streets.

San Antonio’s Síclovía started in October 2011 and is based off a similar event in the country of Colombia. The streets are shut down to give cyclists and runners a clear path to exercise.

Since it’s first inception, attendance has soared from 30,000 to 75,000 people, and even more are expected this Sunday. Monica Garza, director of Síclovía with the YMCA, said while cycling and other physical activity is the main attraction, the new Southtown route will offer new features.

“You’re going to see a lot of different activities because this is an ‘artsier’ area," Garza said. "So we’ll have Urban 15, we’re going to have a Better Block activation on Roosevelt right before Steves Ave."

This is the first time Síclovía will move from it’s original location and head to the South Side. District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viragan said she’s looking forward to people visiting the mission area, but hopes people living nearby also join in.

"Specifically in District 3, when it comes to diabetes, out of 1,000 people, 68, according to San Antonio Metro Health, have diabetes. Siclovia is going to now offer an opportunity where people can see different variations or how to get active, be active, and get healthy,” Viagran said.

The Síclovía route will start at St. Mary’s Street and Cesar Chavez and travel to Mission Conceptción Sports Park. Síclovía begins at 11 a.m. this Sunday and will run until 4 p.m.
