The ETA3 Trio, In Concert

A last-minute substitution lent some nervous energy to the ETA3 Trio’s performance on October 14 as part of the Tuesday Musical Club’s annual Artist Series. With only a few hours to rehearse, Milana Strezeva took the place of the ensemble’s regular pianist, TomokoNakayama, who couldn’t be released from a performance back in the group’s home base of New York.

Alexey Gorokholinsky opened the program with a solo clarinet version of Bach’s “Violin Partita in D Minor” that was greeted warmly by the crowd at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church. Flutist Chelsea Knox also took center stage for a rollicking, rocking, circus-like solo piece by British composer Ian Clarke.

Debussy’s “Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun” was gorgeously rendered by the trio, but interrupted by the loud beeping of a truck backing up outside. Maybe the Tuesday Musical Club should rethink afternoon concerts when when there’s so much construction going on in the neighborhood around the venue.

Below, you can hear Bartok’s “Romanian Folk Dances,” arranged by the trio members, and the opening movement of Aram Khachaturian’s “Trio,” a work the composer wrote while at the Moscow Conservatory that Gorokholinsky said reminds him of heavy metal guitar solos during its wilder moments.

The concert concluded with a fantasy on themes from Bellini’s opera “La Sonnambula.”

Nathan has been with TPR since 1995, when he began working on classical music station KPAC 88.3 FM, as host of “Tuesday Night at the Opera.” He soon learned the ropes on KSTX 89.1 FM, and volunteered to work practically any shift that came his way, on either station. He worked in nearly every capacity on the radio before moving into Community Engagement, Marketing, and Digital Media. His reporting and criticism has been honored by the Houston Press Club and Texas Associated Press.
