With nearly 64 percent of the votes in Congressional District 20, Joaquín Castro won the seat being vacated by the long-serving Charlie Gonzalez who is retiring at the end of this term.

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro introduced his brother, Joaquín as a newly-elected congressman, saying that he will be a breath of fresh air in Washington, D.C.

“It gives me great pleasure to introduce the next congressman,” said the mayor, who rushed from the Pre-K for SA headquarters to be at his brother’s side as soon as enough of the votes were in to call the election for Joaquín.

“First, I want to say, ‘Thank you’ to my brother, Julián. I am the better-looking twin," said Joaquín, "His support has meant so much, not only growing up, but in public service. Somebody asked me today when we were on the street corner, waving signs, trying to remind people to vote over on the west side of town. Somebody asked me, ‘Is it easier to have a brother there with you?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ It absolutely has been a godsend to have my twin brother there with me throughout my whole life and in public service, so thank you, Julián, very much."

Joaquín spoke often of an infrastructure of opportunity, which he defined as means and methods for people to get a good education and good jobs across all social lines. He said his support came from many different sectors, which will help him work across the aisle to accomplish goals for Texas.

Castro talked about his next step.

“Uh, well, get a little bit of rest," said Joaquín. "This was a long campaign. We campaigned for almost a year and a half, so I’m excited. It was thankfully a strong showing. We got support from a lot of Democrats but also from some Independents and Republicans. So that means a lot.”

Castro said he’s eager to get to work on education, shoring up Obamacare, and bringing jobs to District 20.
