Red Flag Warning Issued For Areas Of South Texas - Fire Danger High

National Weather Service
The area in pink is under a Red Flag warning for fire danger until 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag warning for the western part of South Texas due to "critical" fire conditions. The warning is in effect from noon to 7 p.m. due to a dry cold front that will drop temperatures across the state.

Winds of 15 to 20 mph are expected and may reach up to 30 mph in some places. These gusty winds make the danger of wildfires especially high when paired with low humidity and very dry air. Outdoor burning is not recommended, and any fires that do start will likely spread rapidly.

The Weather Service warning encourages everyone in the area to "avoid the use of open flames or any activities that may generate sparks."

This does not, however, seem to be affecting New Year's fireworks plans in Bexar County. Yet.

Bexar County Commissioner's Court issued a burn ban on Thursday honoring the recommendation of Fire Marshal Craig Roberts for unincorporated areas of Bexar County, but fireworks are still on for those unincorporated areas.

Reminder: Discharging fireworks within city limits is not allowed at any time.

There is a chance of rain on Sunday, which would help ease the worries of the fire marshal and other county officials, but if we don't see any moisture, and the dry conditions continue, neighborhood shock and awe displays like the one depicted below may be banned entirely.

The city's Celebrate San Antonio fireworks display and party is still on for Monday night.

Dry winds and drop in temperature

Tonight's forecast is 30 degrees -- right at the freezing mark -- and although you may be tired of the on-again off-again cold weather, be sure to take precautions that your water pipes do not freeze and burst; Saturday night's forecast is for temperatures in the low 30s as well.

  • The SAWS emergency phone number is: (210) 704-7297

Expect temperatures in the mid 50s for Saturday and Sunday during the day, and Sunday night brings the chance of rain, which will stay with us through the new year.
