Just a few weeks before school begins, when many parents bring in their kids in for back-to-school shots, the City of San Antonio's Metropolitan Health District downtown immunization clinic will close and move to the West Side.
While the majority of immunizations in the city are given by primary care physicians and other clinics, Metro Health’s new hub is expected to give up to 15,000 vaccinations per year.
The only city-run vaccination clinic is moving to the Frank Garrett Center on Northwest 18th St. near Culebra and Metro Health is expecting to open the new center on Aug. 5.
Metro Health Director Dr. Thomas Schlenker said the decision to move was based on several factors, including parking and downtown traffic.
The Frank Garrett center used to host many health screening organizations, but nearly all left in the past two years.
