Cornyation, the annual spoof of San Antonio during Fiesta, generates money for AIDS- and HIV-based charities and this year more than $150,000 was returned to the community as a result of the three-night show.
Though the show is not necessarily exclusive to the gay community, HIV and AIDS issues tend to resonate within that group.
"A good portion of the performers and people are gay that participate in Cornyation and this is something that is close to everyone’s heart," said Cornyation President Tom McKenzie. "It affects people across the spectrum."
The San Antonio AIDS Foundation received $70,000 and SAAF executive director David Euhel said the funds will be used to hire more 24-hour on-site nurses.
“The federal government does not pay for skilled nursing care and this will certainly take care of at least three CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) salaries for the year if not two LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) salaries and it is just a relief for our budget," Euhel said.
Beat AIDS also received $70,000 and will use the money to hire staff for the next year.
Additonal money was used to fund the Robert Rehm Theater Arts Scholarship.
Jesse Mata, a skit designer, said while hard work is put in by the volunteers, much of thanks goes to the attendees.
"Ultimately the cast and crew puts the show on but the audience makes these days possible where we can make a difference in the community. So we’re very appreciative to San Antonio and to all of the folks who come out and enjoy the show every year," Mata said.
