UPDATE: The Starhopper test was canceled shortly before its launch around 6 p.m.

SpaceX was scheduled to test its Starhopper space vehicle Monday at its South Texas launch facility.  Nearby residents were asked to leave their homes.

Cameron County Emergency managers sent the alert last week to homes in Boca Chica village, which sit less than two miles from the launch pad.

It warned if the SpaceX experienced a malfunction, it could produce enough pressure to break windows.

The so-called Starhopper had been tested while tethered to earth multiple times at the site.

Monday's test would have been the second untethered test. It was expected to ascend more than 600 feet.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has said the Starhopper will eventually take the company to Mars and beyond.
