The ICE detention center in Dilley, Texas, is again at the center of a national fight over the detention of migrant families and children. But for Tania Warner, the controversy is not abstract. It is something she says she lived through with her 7-year-old daughter.

Detainees at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center claim the tap water there is not fit for human consumption, so they’re forced to pay for bottled water.

The county joins some San Antonio city councilmembers who have spoken out against the facility.

Conditions inside the family immigration detention facility in Dilley, Texas are drawing renewed scrutiny as detainees, attorneys and advocates describe shortages in medical attention, inadequate and substandard food and water, and serious mental-health strain — allegations that federal officials and the private operator dispute.

Federal and state lawmakers and other advocates called for justice for migrant detainees, including children.

U.S. Reps. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio and Jasmine Crockett of Dallas said conditions they observed Wednesday inside the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley amount to “inhumanity.” The two Democrats urged Immigration and Customs Enforcement to release five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and other children.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers arrived in riot gear in Dilley on Wednesday as protesters gathered outside the South Texas Family Residential Center to draw attention to the detention of a five-year-old boy from the Minneapolis area being held at the ICE facility.

A protest broke out Saturday at the ICE-run South Texas family detention complex in Dilley, where five-year-old Liam Ramos is being detained.
