For years studies have been pointing to the trend of diminishing diversity in public education. The word resegregationgets thrown around to describe the phenomena. And whether you agreeor disagree with that label, the numbers show in places like Illinois, Alabama, Texas, and many other states a growing lack of racial diversity.
This is the 60 anniversary of Brown v Board of Education, the case that made "separate but equal" illegal in public education.
A new Frontline special "Separate and Unequal" explores the issue at the street level through the ongoing fight to split the city of Baton Rouge into two cities, one that would be predominantly black and one, St George, would be predominantly white. The effort is predicated on the idea of more local control of schools.
Separate and Unequal airs tomorrow at 9 p.m. on KLRN.
