Trio Draws A Line From Jazz's Past To Present

L to R: Ryan Shaw, Graham Dechter, Alex Frank.

The Lineage Trio take their inspiration from the members’ common love of guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelley Manne, who recorded five albums together under the name “The Poll Winners,” after the three men took top honors in the annual Downbeat magazine poll... five times! The Lineage Trio is quick to tell you they haven’t yet won any polls, themselves. But you never know what the future might hold, so listen up! You could say you heard them here, first.

The trio is made up of guitarist Graham Dechter, bassist Alex Frank, and Ryan Shaw on drums. In this live session at Jazz, TX, the trio plays a swinging uptempo version of "Unforgettable," made famous by Nat King Cole, an obscure gem called "Tangerine" written by director Victor Schertzinger for his final film, "The Fleet's In," (1942), and club owner Doc Watkins sits in for a Barney Kessel blues number that sounds just like its title: "Be Deedle De Do."
