The historic Esquire Tavern, the oldest bar on the San Antonio River Walk and well-known for its cocktails, announced it is changing hands.

Bexar County commissioners approved a $10 million investment Tuesday to renovate a military facility that will support the Defense Health Agency’s operations at Fort Sam Houston. The project is expected to help the Falls Church, Virginia-based agency consolidate several leased spaces into the South Beach Pavilion facility.

The city bought the building with funds from the Spurs which plans to redevelop the property for an arena district in downtown San Antonio.

Announced in May, the move by TPR and the San Antonio Report to share resources and capabilities and improve efficiencies launched July 1.

City staff gave an update on Project Marvel, saying that negotiations with the Spurs won’t start until cost and other studies are completed.

Proposed for the South Texas Medical Center, the new park will be located at 8500 Oakland Rd., near Floyd Curl Drive.
