SAPL Learn and Remember program focuses on censorship during the Holocaust this year
For 11 years, the San Antonio Public Library has presented a series titled “The Holocaust Learn and Remember.” This year the program focuses on censorship and how the Nazi regime controlled information in order to suppress Jewish people and other persecuted groups. The timeliness of this theme is a reminder of current censorship efforts across the state. Texas currently leads the nation with the most banned books in school districts and libraries.

In "The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life," San Antonio writer Simran Jeet Singh recounts his early life on the North Side of San Antonio. The book explains how the core tenets of the Sikh religion — love and service to others — helped him navigate the discrimination he often faced.

Fusion centers often abuse their authority and surveil innocent citizens
Fusion centers are meant to serve as hubs of intelligence to flow between federal government, private sector, state, local, tribal and territorial partners. However, in a recent investigation, the Brennan Center for Justice uncovered not only flawed analyses from the centers but also abuses of their authority and instances of the surveillance of people engaged in First Amendment-protected activities. Under the guise of counterterrorism, they have historically targeted American Muslims and claimed that activists are threats.

“American Pain” explores the ‘Pain Clinic’ franchise in Florida and its downfall
In the late 2000s, the opioid epidemic was exacerbated by two brothers in Florida who owned and operated a franchise of pain clinics. These “Pill Mills” often ignored blatant signs that a patient was an addict, and they wrote prescriptions for high doses of opioids.
