Free gun locks will be provided by San Antonio’s District 8 Councilman Manny Pelaez and the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office this Wednesday.
The gun locks – for handguns and long guns – will be available to anyone who wants one. Councilman Manny Pelaez says the giveaway is to provide gun safety measures for homes with children.
“The simple way to do it is to lock your guns up and make sure if a child were to find a gun that these locks are in place – make it impossible for them to discharge and hurt somebody,” he said.
Paleaz added that he hopes the ease of access will allow people who are unable to get one to obtain it.
“No longer will there be an excuse about, ‘Well I’m not going to go buy one (gun lock), I can’t afford one.’ We’re giving them away,” he said.
The gun locks come from the Bexar County Sheriff’s office as part of County’s joint partnership with University Health System called Gun Safety 4 Bexar. In total, the coalition has about 17,000 guns locks to give out – several hundred of those will be available at the councilman’s event.
The locks will be given out at Mission Ridge Range and Academy on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
