Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The Vatican says the procedure was successful and the 71-year-old pontiff is recovering in a Rome hospital. The stage of the cancer remains unknown, and his public appearances have been canceled through October 20.
