Bexar County continues to lead the state in the number of people suffering from diabetes, according to the Metropolitan Health District's annual report. At 14 percent the county leads the country by five percent, and its citizens are more likely to progress to serious complications.

County officials hope abatement efforts like free "lifestyle-changing" courses  in conjunction with the YMCA and a new public health campaignthat calls out the many negatives of soda and other sugary drinks will help.

Also we talk with one of the leading experts in diabetes research on what studies are going on right now that can impact the future of diabetes care.

Guests:

  • Dr. Thomas Schlenker, director of the Metropolitan Health District
  • Dr. Ralph DeFronzo, chief of the diabetes division at UT Health Science Center and deputy director of the Texas Diabetes Institute at University Health System
