Wednesday, May 6
6:35 p.m. — New walk-up testing sites announced
There have been 1,761 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the San Antonio area, up 84 from yesterday. Of those 84 new cases, 54 are from the Bexar County jail.
Mayor Ron Nirenberg reported one new death, bringing the total to 53.
A total 834 people have recovered; 874 people still have the virus.
Nirenberg also reported:
- 60 positive cases in hospitals
- 27 under investigation in hospitals
- 34 people in intensive care
- 21 people on ventilators
Today, the Metro Health Department announced two new walk-up testing sites, one at Las Palmas Library (515 Castroville Road) and one at Woodlawn Lake Park (1103 Cincinnati Ave). Both have no cost and require no appointment.
Sheriff Javier Salazar of the Bexar County jail said 42 people from the jail have recovered. The jail has seen 301 positive cases in total, including inmates and deputies.
There have been a total of 259 inmates who have tested positive. Of those, 222 were asymptomatic. Salazar said the positive cases seem to be leveling off.

4 p.m. — Update on surrounding counties
Cases in Comal County reached 61 Wednesday after two more residents tested positive for the COVID-19. Two more people also recovered, bringing the recovery total to 44. There have been six reported deaths related to the virus.
Atascosa County confirmed its 20th case on Tuesday night. Twelve people have recovered and there has been one death.
The Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed 87 cases in Guadalupe County, 34 in Wilson County and 20 in Medina County.
There are 17 COVID-19 cases in Kendall County. Both Uvalde and Bandera Counties report six cases each.
Tuesday, May 5
6:31 p.m. — Four new deaths reported, bringing total to 52
Mayor Ron Nirenberg reported 1,677 total confirmed cases, up 25 from yesterday. Of those 25, two are from the Bexar County jail. The deaths are the first reported since April 30.
There are four new reported deaths, bringing the total to 52. Three of the four deaths occurred before April 26, but the city was just notified of them, according to Nirenberg. The fourth death was an inmate in the county jail.
There have been 802 recoveries, and 824 people still have the virus. The recovery rate is currently 48%.
Nirenberg reported a jump in the hospital numbers, with 61 people who have tested positive in hospitals. There are 31 people in hospitals who are under investigation. Thirty-five people are in intensive care, and 25 are on ventilators.
Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff reported that 189 businesses have gotten small business loans through LiftFund, totaling $3.8 million. He said the full $5 million of the fund will be distributed by the end of the week, according to Wolff.
At the jail, there are 294 positive cases. Of those, 217 were asymptomatic.
Kevin Voelkel of Toyota and Julissa Carielo of Tejas Premier Building Contractors co-chaired the economic transition team and gave an overview of the team’s reopening plan that was announced this afternoon.
