April 26: Officials Report More Than 40% Of Confirmed Cases In Bexar County Have Recovered

Texas Public Radio is updating the latest information on COVID-19 in the San Antonio area, along with how local businesses are adjusting,how you can help those in need and what you can do to stay entertained at home. TPR is also providing live updates on the Rio Grande Valley.

Here's what we know ...

Sunday, April 26

6:35 p.m. — Mayor Nirenberg, Judge Wolff adress forthcoming comments from Gov. Abbott

Mayor Ron Nirenberg reported 1,254 confirmed cases — up from 1,231 yesterday. Of those cases, 531 have recovered, 34 more than reported last night. There are no new deaths, with the total at 43.

There are 680 people who still have COVID-19. Of those, 58 are hospitalized, and 33 are in intensive care.

County Judge Nelson Wolff said there have been a total of 59 cases in the Bexar County jail. Ten people have recovered.

Tomorrow at 2:30 p.m., Gov. Greg Abbott is expected to release more details about reopening the state.

"We are cautious about what we may hear tomorrow and hopeful in the sense that everything the governor has said up until now is that we will be guided by medical exerts first," Nirenberg said.

Nirenberg added that he hopes the state allows for some "local latitude," so that communities have room to adapt social distancing measures if necessary. He said the city will keep an eye on the number of cases and will adjust accordingly.

12:35 p.m. — Walmart opens testing site

A Walmart on San Antonio's West Side opened its first COVID-19 drive-thru testing site on Saturday.

Free testing at the 8923 W. Military Drive location is available for anyone exhibiting symptoms of the virus. A Walmart pharmacist will hand individuals a self-administered nasal test so they can swab their own nose while staying in their vehicle.Test results are delivered within two days.

Residents are asked to make an appointment online for the drive-thru testing. Visit DoINeedACOVID19Test.com for more information and to book an appointment.

9 a.m. — Surrounding counties update

Officials with Comal County confirmed its 49th case of COVID-19 in the area on Friday. Six deaths have been reported and 34 patients have fully recovered.

Wilson County's case count increased by three, leaving the total at 29. The county also reports nine recoveries to-date.

The Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed 68 cases in Guadalupe County.

Kendall County has 16 cases and Atascosa has at least 14 cases.

There are 19 cases confirmed in Medina County, with two reported deaths. Bandera County has six confirmed cases.

Saturday, April 25

6:25 p.m. — Total recoveries just under 500

Mayor Ron Nirenberg and County Judge Nelson Wolff reported 36 more confirmed cases; the total number of cases is now at 1,231. There are no new deaths, leaving the total at 43.

Nirenberg also said 497 people have now totally recovered, 4o% of the total number of cases.

There are 62 confirmed cases in hospitals, and 46 people under investigation. Of the 62 in the hospital, 32 are in intensive care and 17 are on venitlators.

6 p.m. — Girl Scouts offer free wifi

Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas have transitioned two of their parking lots to free Wi-Fi access spots for families who may not have reliable internet at home.

The free Parking Lot Internet Cafe is is available at the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center at 811 North Coker Loop. The West Side Girl Scout Leadership Center is at 5622 West Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard.

Wi-Fi is available daily between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. No password is needed.

Visitors are asked to remain in their cars.

5:45 p.m. — Comal County offers new drive-thru testing site

A free drive-thru COVID-19 testing site in Comal County will be open next week for one day only.

The site is at Canyon High School in New Braunfels. It will be open to appointments only on Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Those needing a test can visit TXCovidTest.org beginning Tuesday morning to register and receive an appointment time. Between 50 and 60 people will be tested.

The site is set up by the Texas Division of Emergency Management and the Texas Department of State Health Services, in coordination with Comal County and Comal ISD.
