River Authority Volunteer Program Looking For "Watershed Wise Warriors"

Watershed Wise Warriors is the first volunteer recruitment program for the San Antonio River Authority. Volunteers age 15 and older are needed for two-to-four-hour activities that vary throughout the year.

The San Antonio River Authority is inviting members of the community who are interested in watershed preservation to join its new volunteer program "Watershed Wise Warriors."

The call is going out for volunteers in the counties of Bexar, Wilson, Karnes and Goliad. It’s the first time SARA has called for an ongoing volunteer bank for its activities. Spokesman Steven Schauer said the "warriors" are needed for the not-so-sexy jobs.

“Picking up trash, plastic bags and Styrofoam and those types of things, particularly following rain events,” Schauer said.

But, Schauer said, there are also jobs that are considerably more interesting and fun, "Such as coming out to the Mission Reach and helping to remove invasive, non-native species."

Schauer said you don’t have to be a master gardener or have any training.

“So on an activity -- such as invasive-species removal -- there will be educated, qualified staff members there to work in small teams with volunteers to make sure people are removing the right stuff,” Schauer said.

SARA also will offer educational walks and activities for volunteers to learn more about the watershed. The program launched Wednesday and offers community service hours for students and others wishing to augment their resumes. The program is open to volunteers 15 years and older.
