In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, teachers and educators can lasso art, culture and history for free at the Briscoe Western Art Museum May 3 – 6. Educators can simply present their school ID or proof of employment to receive free admission – and a 10% in the Briscoe’s Hendler Family Museum Store.
The Briscoe offers free tours to students of all ages as well as an outreach program, educational materials and activity sheets to help educators share the West with their students. The teacher appreciation special includes the closing weekend of the museum’s Night of Artists Exhibition and Sale. From scenic landscapes and stunning sculptures to inspired Native Americans, vaqueros and charreadas, more than 280 works by today’s top Western artists are on display through May 5. One of the premier Western Art exhibitions in the world, Night of Artists features new works of painting, sculpture and mixed media by 86 leading contemporary Western artists. Once the exhibition concludes, the works join private collections, making Night of Artists the only opportunity to view the collection.

Families and visitors are invited to learn about the American West in the Briscoe’s monthly education series, “Full STEAM Ahead”. Learners of all ages will work together and learn about the American West by engaging in hands-on, STEAM learning experiences.
Sharing the American West through STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics – each of the activities ties back to the Briscoe’s art and artifacts, bringing the West to life in a new way. From transportation and weather to animals, astronomy and engineering, each program explores an aspect of life in the West to engage and inspire learning.
“Full STEAM Ahead” programming is now a part of Locals Day where Bexar County residents can enjoy FREE general admission! Included with general admission for non-residents and FREE for members. Children 12 and under always receive FREE!

Little orphan Sophie can’t sleep. When she peeks out the window, she is surprised to see a giant. He’s surprised to see her too and whisks Sophie away to his home in Giant Country. But this is no ordinary giant; Sophie’s giant is the world’s only friendly 24-foot-tall giant. His primary occupation is the collection and distribution of good dreams to children. Other giants steal and have a nasty habit of eating children! To save the children of England, Sophie and the Big Friendly Giant (BFG) embark on a magical journey to Buckingham Palace where they must convince the Queen to help them get rid of all the bad giants once and for all. Along the way, Sophie finds a friend she can count on and the BFG finds a friend who accepts him for who he is. The Big Friendly Giant promises to deliver a captivating mix of thrilling adventures, playful wordplay, and even some explosive whizzpopping moments guaranteed to make you smile!

The Irish Cultural Society of San Antonio will hold its meeting on Sunday, May 5, at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, in the parlor room, 102 Lorenz Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209. A business meeting, followed by a musical program/guest speaker and an Irish High Tea and other refreshments are planned. All are welcome.
