A Historic Connection with San Antonio
Mariachi Vargas first performed in San Antonio in 1979 as part of the city’s inaugural mariachi music festival, which laid the groundwork for what would become a deep and lasting bond between the ensemble and this cultural capital of Texas. In 1987, they recorded and toured with Linda Ronstadt on her groundbreaking Canciones de Mi Padre album — the best-selling non-English-language album in U.S. history, with over 2 million copies sold and certified double platinum. More recently, the group spent 18 intense months accompanying Luis Miguel on a world tour with 194 performances, and contributed to his México en la Piel and ¡México Por Siempre! albums. Mariachi Vargas has performed in San Antonio almost every year since the start of the Mariachi Extravaganza in 1995. Their dedication to performance and cultural excellence makes them a cornerstone of the Mariachi Extravaganza experience.
Mariachi Vargas’ appearance at the Mariachi Extravaganza will be the highlight of a weekend that features the largest and most competitive national mariachi group and vocal competitions in the U.S.Mariachi Vargas brings history, culture, tradition, and immense Mexican pride — and we cannot wait to welcome them back this December!

Yennayer is the traditional New Year of the Amazigh (Berber) people, indigenous to North Africa, with cultural roots stretching back more than 3,000 years. It marks the beginning of the agricultural year and is celebrated with music, traditional foods, storytelling, and community gatherings. The holiday reflects values of renewal, unity, cultural identity, and peace. With a rapidly growing Amazigh community in San Antonio, this event represents progress in cultural visibility, diversity, and education. This event provides an opportunity for local residents to discover a culture that is still unfamiliar to many, while helping strengthen cultural exchange, inclusivity, and community engagement. We truly believe that adding Amazigh cultural representation to San Antonio is a positive and meaningful step that aligns with the city’s commitment to diversity. We also believe that this event offers residents of San Antonio an opportunity to learn about a culture that is still new to many.
