Dr. Brent Ortego, a retired biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, spent 34 years working on nongame and endangered species issues in Texas. He began banding birds under a permit held by Dr. Ross Dawkins from San Angelo in 1995. One of his projects was banding hummingbirds at his home in Victoria County from 1995 – 2010. During the first winter, he banded 14 hummingbirds, which eventually led to a peak wintering population of 160 birds. During his presentation to BAS, Dr. Ortego will discuss these amazing birds, and how that remarkable increase of Victoria winter hummingbirds occurred.
