The Art of Laura Perea

The Art of Laura Perea
Last month our owner, Jenny, discovered a box of tattered but incredible drawings and paintings at an estate sale. It led her down a rabbit-hole to uncover the mystery of the artist, Laura Perea, who brilliantly and heart-breakingly captured her time in a local psychiatric hospital in the 1950s. Laura was the last living descendent of her immediate family when she died in the 90s. No known photos of her exist. But we do have her art, which tells a story often ignored or hidden, and so we've decided it should be shown and appreciated. Laura's art will be displayed in our community room on May 24th, with a special reception at 5pm if you want to come and talk about art, mental health and the importance of learning from our past so that we can see how far we've come, and how far we still have to go. It's free to all.
