The final check-in video with this year’s Gurwitz International Piano Competition winners visits Jiale Li, whose performance of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the San Antonio Symphony helped him earn the gold medal, and $25,000.

In the video below, posted to Musical Bridges Around the World’s YouTube channel, Li shares a few bars of music he recently composed, and notes happily that the $25,000 prize helped him pay off his remaining tuition expenses at the Eastman School of Music, where he is pursuing a DMA degree. Li also explains that in addition to learning new repertoire, he’s been working on a lot of puzzles with his girlfriend during quarantine! The video concludes with Li performing music by Frederic Chopin on the Kilbourn Hall stage at the Eastman School of Music.

During The Gurwitz competition, Li opened his second round performance with music by Domenico Scarlatti. You can hear Li's performance of the Sonata in B minor, L33 in the linked audio player below.
