'Selena,' Native Plants And Celtic Fest: Your Weekend Is Here!

From Selena to Native Plants to Scottish Highland Games,  there's a lot going on this weekend. Tonight, Angela Martinez says you should head downtown.

"Yes, we're screening Selena in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the movie release. We're screening it at the Arneson River Theatre at La Villita."

And it's not just the Selena movie.

"There'll be a performer before the movie.  Guests should bring their picnics, lawn chairs, blankets. We'll have two food trucks. Cheesy Jane's and Mi Taquito will be there."

As to what this'll set you back: nothing. It's a free movie. Then on Saturday morning, head north to Boerne.

"We are having our Mostly Native Plant Saleat the Kendall County Fairgrounds," says the Cibolo Nature Center's Julia Murphy.

"These are tried and true plants that are good for our region. They're generally drought tolerant."

They're selling vegetables, flowers, trees and shrubs, and the native part is important.

"If we can help people green up their places, and also do so in a sustainable fashion, that helps everyone."

It's a rain or shine event since its held in a covered area. And on Saturday and Sunday in Helotes it's the Scottish Highland Games and Celtic Music Festival.

"We have four stages of dance and music. We have Scottish heavy athletics."

Jenni May-Dennis says you may not know it by its name, but you probably know heavy athletics.

"Which, if you've seen on TV is like when they throw a telephone poll end-over-end. We have a full, sanctioned Highland Dance competition. In our rodeo grounds we have sheep herding. We have 53 dogs that will be competing in regional trials for sheep herding."

They also feature all kinds of food and, of course, lots of music.

"Our headliner is the Young Dubliners, and they are a Celtic Rock Band.  It's Saturday from 9 to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 to 6p.m."
