The San Antonio Choral Society has a pair of performances this week.  I spoke to Jennifer Seighman, who is the group’s artistic director.

“We have two concerts this week. The first one is Tuesday at 7:30 at the Oblate School of Theology and then we’ll give a second performance on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Travis Park United Methodist Church,” Seighman said.

She said the selections they’ll be singing are specifically to highlight the human voice.

“Much of the music will be a capella," Seighman said. We’ll be doing some German pieces, some early chant renaissance pieces, and then we’ll be doing some modern pieces by American composers and some contemporary British composers."

I asked what is it that a human voice can convey better than a music instrument.

“The interesting thing about your voice is that your body is the instrument," she said. "It’s not something extraneous that’s producing sound; it’s coming from within you. Especially with choral music; just breathing together.

She then expanded that idea to cover the upcoming concerts:

"It’s really a chance for us to really just convey the beauty of what the human voice is capable of,” Seighman said.

I asked her to tell me about the troupe's upcoming trip to Germany.

“At the end of June were doing a 10-day choir tour to Germany and Austria," Seighman said. "We’ll be performing with a choir from Munich, and then a choir from Vienna, so we’ll do a couple of joint concerts. We’re following in the footsteps of some famous composers, so we’re super excited about this trip.

Your last two chances to see the San Antonio Choral Society before they head out on their working European vacation are Tuesday, May 13 and then Sunday, May 18.
