Blue Star And Botanical Garden Showcase Contemporary Art In Collaborative Project

The San Antonio Botanical Garden and the Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum have teamed up for a project that all started with a pretty simple premise.

"Not everybody in San Antonio is going to be able to come to the museum to see contemporary art, so it’s important to go out into the community," said Blue Star Director of Special Projects Bill Fitzgibbons.

So go out they did. They displayed art in a wide variety of places.

"Everything from St. Paul Square to the grounds of UTSA to the Botanical Garden," Fitzgibbons said.

Fitzgibbons found a like minded view about a decade ago at the Botanical Garden, so they created what’s called "Art in the Garden."

"Art in the Garden is a wonderful collaboration with our friends at Blue Star,” said San Antonio Botanical Garden Executive Director Bob Brackman.

“And it’s a way to showcase wonderful contemporary Art. We change it out every year,” he said.

This year they’re displaying the work of Chicago Artist Richard Hunt, who, as Fitzgibbons explained, has an impressive resume.

“Richard has more public art commissions than any artist in the United States," Fitzgibbons said. "He’s a really great, down-to-earth guy.”

“He actually juried this show last year, and we’ll actually be showcasing his art this year" said Brackman.

There’s an opening reception on Friday, February 28 at 5:30 p.m. to introduce people to the new exhibition. It’s all a part of the Botanical Garden’s “Cultivate Yourself” view, as expressed by Brackman.

“From Shakespeare in the Park to our concerts, to our family days, from Fiesta to October when we have our Botanica event. We have wonderful exhibits throughout the year," Brackman said.
