From Texas Standard:

College is expensive. These days, average in-state tuition and fees at a public university will run just under $10,000 per academic year; it goes up to $35,000 for private universities, according to data from the College Board.

Rice University is "dramatically expanding" its financial aid offerings, promising full scholarships to undergrads whose families have incomes under $130,000. The school says it wants to reduce student debt — and make it easier for students from low-income families to attend.

"Talent deserves opportunity," Rice President David Leebron said while announcing the plan on Tuesday.

HOUSTON — A venture capitalist and his wife have donated $50 million to their alma mater Rice University as the largest gift in school history.

John and Ann Doerr on Thursday announced the donation, through their private family foundation, to encourage new leaders.

Both hold Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Rice in electrical engineering. Retired Brig. Gen. Tom Kolditz will head the Doerr Institute for New Leaders.

Officials at Rice University, in Houston, say the institute will offer students a combination of proven techniques and modern, next-generation practices.

The institute will focus on cultural and global diversity and inclusion.
