The race for Texas’ 23rd Congressional District is attracting national attention. After a scandal-plagued re-election campaign, Congressman Tony Gonzales has dropped out of the Republican primary runoff, making Brandon Herrera the GOP nominee. And now, Democrat Katy Padilla Stout is trying to take advantage of the shake-up to flip the district.

The San Antonio Republican acknowledged the relationship publicly for the first time as the House Ethics Committee probes allegations involving the former aide.

Scandal-battered Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales survived his primary fight and will advance to a May 26 runoff against challenger Brandon Herrera, keeping alive his bid for a fourth term in one of the nation’s most closely watched House races. On the Democratic side, Katy Padilla Stout won her party’s nomination.

Herrera said he doesn’t expect the results to change, “but I feel I owe it to my volunteers, voters, and supporters to leave no stone unturned.”
