What's being done to identify and address the root causes of our city's challenges when it comes to community safety and family well-being?
In January, local nonprofit SA2020 released its 2018 impact report which analyzes the city's progress in various indicators to improve conditions within San Antonio communities.
Targeting "eleven cause areas," the report uses local data to measure whether goals have been met or are on track to be met by 2020.
"The Source"takes an annual deep dive into the impact report to address a series of "complex community challenges." This specific show addresses indicators related to family violence and child abuse.
SA2020 aims to boost overall family well-being by setting a goal to decrease the number of confirmed child abuse or neglect victims by 25 percent. In 2017, there were 6,175 confirmed victims of child abuse and neglect in Bexar County — up almost 36 percent from 2014.
Another vision is for San Antonio to be the safest big city in America by 2020. One of the defining indicators of community safety is the incidence of family violence. The target is a 50 percent decrease in family assaults by 2020. In 2016, Bexar County had one of the highest number of domestic violence homicides in the state.
