Pedro Martinez is setting a high bar for the San Antonio Independent School District, where he recently became the third superintendent in four years.
Martinez wants to raise graduation rates to 90 percent, ensure that nearly three-quarters of the city's third largest school district get an 'A' or 'B' rating from the Texas Education Agency by 2020, and all while pledging to remain transparent on metrics and results.
The ambitious five-year plan will have to confront the shortcomings of a district that caters to 54,000 students, most of whom come from economically disadvantaged families, and 20 percent of schools that didn't meet the TEA standards in the previous year.
