“There’s a reason that [‘Don Giovanni’] has been popular for 230 years,” according to Troy Peters, director of the UTSA Orchestra.
“It's a comedy, it's a love story, and it's even got a dark, tragic ending. It's everything you could want! If you're sad, you can be sad if you're happy, you can be happy if you're in love, you can be in love. If you're lonely, you can resent it!” Peters joked.
Peters was in our studios with members of UTSA Lyric Theatre to offer a live-on-the-radio preview of this weekend’s production of “Don Giovanni,” happening Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at the Recital Hall on the UTSA Main Campus.
Peters said that the opera remains popular for its classic story of comeuppance, as well as its melodies. “This [story] is about kind of the consequences of being a libertine or a rake and moving through society without regard for women's feelings. And it's, it's no mostly not good consequences in this case. But there are some, some beautiful tunes along the way.”
As Donna Anna, graduate student Emily Densmore said she’s performing in a Mozart opera for the first time.
“There's really some incredible scenes that you're going to see on stage with some incredible feeling behind it. We've been putting in a lot of work, and we're all really, really excited to give it to the public this weekend,” Densmore told us.
The stage production is also presented in partnership with UTSA's School of Architecture + Planning and will feature a gallery exhibition of student design work associated with the collaboration in the lobby before and after each performance.
