Tuesday, June 2
8:15 p.m. – 23 additional cases of COVID-19 in Cameron County
Cameron County Public Health confirmed 23 new cases of COVID-19, taking the total number of known positive cases to 799.
Fourteen of the new reports are from Brownsville including the youngest case: a 9-year-old female. The oldest case, an 88-year-old male, is a likely a resident of the Spanish Meadows care facility in Brownsville. Both are linked to previous cases.
Tuesday's reports include 4 new cases from Harlingen, 3 new cases from San Benito and a single case each for Port Isabel and Rio Hondo.
There are now 581 recovered individuals in Cameron County, including 15 recent recoveries announced on Tuesday.
8 p.m. – Hidalgo County surpasses 600 known cases of COVID-19
There are now 610 recorded cases of COVID-19 in Hidalgo County after officials confirmed 26 new cases on Tuesday. There are currently 228 active cases in the county.
Sixteen individuals were released from isolation on Tuesday, taking the total number of recoveries up to to 371. Twenty-six patients are in Hidalgo County hospitals receiving treatment including three in intensive care.
Hidalgo County has adminstered over 16,500 tests, about 3,900 of which are still pending. Officials say that state mandates to test 2 percent of the state's population plus "100 percent of all nursing home residents and their staffs" has contributed to the backlog in results.
7 p.m. – Second death in Willacy County, new case in Starr County
Willacy County announced two new cases and one COVID-19 related death on Tuesday. The latest fatality is a man in 60s who died while receiving treatment in Harlingen's Valley Baptist Medical Center.
There are now 21 known cases of COVID-19 in Willacy County. The newest reports include two women who are linked to previous cases.
On Tuesday, Starr County reported its 38th positive case of COVID-19: a male in his early 20s.
COVID-19 cases in both Starr and Willacy counties are being monitored by Region 11 of the Texas Department of State Health Services.
