The League of United Latin American Citizens said Friday its case against the State of Texas over a voter purge list will likely resume on Monday in San Antonio federal court.
LULAC attorneys said testimony was scheduled to resume Friday in Federal Judge Fred Biery's courtroom, but they believed the case was paused to possibly join the case with similar ones in Corpus Christi and Galveston.
The group wanted the state to stop using a list compiled by the Secretary of State's Office and DPS to verify voter eligibility.
LULAC said the list was sent to county election officials to be compared to local voter registration rolls, but has since been found to contain the names of thousands of naturalized citizens who are eligible.
The civil rights organization said that's because the DPS documents used were outdated.
They say the list amounted to intimidation and suppression of voters.
The state said the list was intended to be used as just another resource for counties to check voter rolls or even take no action at all. Some counties sent notices to everyone on the list to ask them to prove their eligibility in 30 days.
