The current HPV vaccine protects against 9 strains of the virus.

San Antonio’s Cancer Therapy and Research Center is joining 68 other National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer centers to push for wider use of the HPV vaccine.

Human papilloma virus, or HPV, is a sexually transmitted disease linked to cervical cancer.

Amelie Ramirez of UT Health San Antonio says not obtaining the vaccine for children is a missed opportunity to protect them against the pain and suffering from cancer in the future.

Wendy Rigby is a San Antonio native who has worked as a journalist for more than 25 years. She spent two decades at KENS-TV covering health and medical news. Now, she brings her considerable background, experience and passion to Texas Public Radio.
