San Antonio Travelers Delayed After Delta Outage

Delta employees give complimentary bottles of water and snacks to customers waiting to get their travel plans back on track.

Most Delta flights in and out of San Antonio saw short delays Monday, after the airline’s computer system went down—grounding flights for several hours.

Delta resumed flights just before 10 a.m., but delays continued in San Antonio and beyond as the carrier worked to reset its operations.

Anna Koos-Dodson’s afternoon flight from San Antonio to Detroit was delayed, but her travel day wasn’t ruined.

“At this point, we’re being told it’s 45 minutes delayed,” said Koos-Dodson. “The line was quite long when we got here, but it has moved pretty quickly. The staff, I think, has been doing a really nice job handling everything. They passed out snacks, and have been very friendly.”

By mid-day, San Antonio Delta flyers were waiting in line about 20 minutes to speak to customer service agents.

Other cities that serve as larger Delta hubs had more trouble getting back on track. Jeremy Brubaker was scheduled to fly home to Atlanta from San Antonio this morning. At the ticket counter this afternoon, he still wasn’t sure when exactly he’d be taking off. Delta’s system-wide outage led to inaccurate flight status information online.

“Let me even look,” said Brubaker. "Every time I check an email or the Delta website, whatever form of technology I go to check, it’s a different time.”

Brubaker says he didn’t get a text or email about the initial delay.

While a few San Antonio flights were canceled and some left on time, most were delayed.

As of 12:30 p.m. this afternoon, the airline had canceled about one in four of its morning flights worldwide.

Delta is allowing customers who run into problems flying this week to rebook their travel without change fees. Passengers whose flights were canceled or delayed more than three hours are also eligible for $200 travel vouchers.
