New VIA Board Appointees Sound Off On Streetcar Project

Bexar County commissioners have appointed Rebecca Q. Cedillo and Bobby Perez to the county seats on the 11-member VIA Board.

Cedillo is the former chief of water resources for SAWS and a former city planner. She said the issues important to her include ensuring adequate infrastructure to keep up with growth in the outlying areas of the county.

Cedillo said the proposed streetcar is a city issue, not a county issue, but she supports it.

“They’ve been researched for a good five years that I recall and they were voted on two years ago," Cedillo said. "And during that process there were tons and tons of community meetings, a lot of scrutiny about the different routes. It’s underway, it’s in the works; how are we going to deny the future? And it’s part of the fabric of transportation.”

Perez, the senior vice president and corporate counsel for Spurs Sports and Entertainment and a former city council member, said he does not have a position on the streetcar project.

“I need to spend some time and study it," Perez said. "And, you know, I’ve read a lot, followed what’s been happening in the newspaper, so I see there’s lots of different issues that have been presented from several different groups. And so that’s one of the things we’ll look at, study, and learn about."

Cedillo said she will have to step down from her position on the board of the University Health System to serve on the VIA Board.

Former city Manager Alex Briseno, who was appointed to lead the VIA Board last month, also left his post on the University Health System board to serve with VIA.
