Dallas In The Running To Host 2016 Republican National Convention

Republican Party of Texas

Republican Party of Texas Chairman Steve Munisteri said Dallas has a very good chance of being selected to host the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Munisteri is on the RNC’s commission, which doesn’t pick the site but helps develop the criteria to make a recommendation. He said hosting 2016 RNC benefits Texas in several ways:

"The economic impact is around a quarter of a billion dollars, but that’s in the direct economic impact, it’s hard to even measure the indirect economic impact if it’s a positive experience for the city, it’s reason why the people want the Olympics,' Munisteri said.

Munisteri said that boosts tourism and helps convince companies to relocate to Texas. Munisteri said the convention commission looked at what if any impacts there might be on the Republican party politically.

"The bottom line is, no one can come up with any empirical or objective data that proves that any votes whatsoever in a state of which it’s held are affected," Munisteri said. "It will not cause a state to go Democrat or Republican based on whether you have the Democrat or Republican convention there. I think what it will do for us locally is excite our base."

The event would put Texas under the spotlight even more if Gov. Rick Perry or U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz decide to run for president in 2016. Munisteri said they will find out in the coming week if Dallas made the final cut.
